Lou's Corner

Lou’s Corner 2/14/2008
I recently attended the D.O.T. dealer-training seminar in Ft. Worth, TX.
If you or your employees have not yet attended one of these seminars I would strongly recommend that you attend. There is a wealth of knowledge available to you at these seminars and as a dealer it is always important to stay on top of our ever-changing market. There were many topics discussed but for this session of Lou’s Corner I am
going to discuss the new e-tag system going into effect later this year.

The first question that many dealers have is, will we need fancy software to print the e-tags? The answer is no, don’t be fooled by companies trying to sell you new software that they say you need to print e-tags.

In order to use the e-tag system all you will need is a computer with Internet access, and an ink jet printer. There are fancy software available that can print e-tags on special printers but it is not necessary.

The second question many of you may have is if there is another way to give your customers temporary tags? The answer is no. Beginning June or July (depending when the state goes live with e-tag) the only option you have is to use the e-tag system or to go directly to the title office the day of the sale and transfer the title.

The new e-tag system is just around the corner the state will be sending correspondence through the mail so it is important that you verify they have your correct address. You will be receiving two letters, one will be your username and the second will be your temporary password.

The state is trying to pass legislation to make it mandatory for all dealers to attend this class. If you participate in the class prior to the legislation passing they are planning to grandfather past attendees in.
