Attorney General

Do you know what to do when the attorney general calls?
Do your employees know how to handle these types of calls?
Could you be the next target of a full scale investigation?

The answer is preparation and training. There I  have said it. "Training"

Running a dealership is a complicated task. A dealer must wear many hats including a trainer's hat. "You" as the dealer are responsible for learning federal as well as the state laws that affect the day to day activities of running a dealership and then teach your employees  how to represent your dealership.

Dealers have a few sources for obtaining valuable information from state to state. One of the sources of information is the Independent Dealers Association. Every state has an association for their dealers.

The independent dealer associations lobby the legislation for laws in the dealers behalf. They conduct training classes on a variety of topics related to the used car businesses.

The second source could be your DMS vendor. I'm referring to your software company. They provide the software  that you use to manage your dealership. Providing you have software.

Does your software provide compliant forms that contain the proper terms and conditions of a legal sale in your state? How do you know? Did you attend the classes in your state? Did your software provider attend any formal training on your state rules? Are they implemented into your software?

Other sources include your attorney, warranty provider and your finance company.

The dealer name on the state license is solely responsible for the dealership and the actions of their employees. The software you choose to manage your dealership is increasingly important in the success of the dealership. The decision is all yours.
